Giwakwa

Here's another monster I drew for a Monster of the Week game I ran. This one is a prison guard who had been taken over by the spirit of a Giwakwa, and still haunted the old abandoned prison in which he had worked, eating any trespassers who happened on the property. The Giwakwa is a man-eating giant from the mythology of the Abanaki people, related to the more familiar legends of the wendigo and similar creatures. The Giwakwa has a heart of ice or a block of ice in its stomach (the block of ice is sometimes even its old human body, frozen solid), and can only be defeated by tricking it into drinking salt water or vomiting up the ice, causing it to melt. Or, as they did in my game, forcing it to eat a paint can full of kerosene and then shooting a flare gun down its throat. I added to the lore of the monster by making it blind, instead relying on hearing using the giant tympanic membranes in what used to be its eye sockets.
